How Jackson Koivun Prepares on the Range Before Competition

What does a complete pre-round range routine actually look like - and what should you focus on before stepping to the first tee?

In this session, Jackson Koivun - one of the top-ranked amateur golfers in the world - walks through the exact process he uses to prepare for tournament play. It’s not about hitting a high volume of shots. It’s about building rhythm, checking tendencies, and creating a clear baseline for the day ahead.

Jackson starts with a gradual progression through the bag, moving from wedge to driver to establish timing and sequence. As the routine builds, the focus shifts from simply loosening up to refining setup, using alignment sticks for feedback, and identifying any patterns that could show up on the course.

The middle of the bag becomes a checkpoint - a moment to confirm that fundamentals are in place, not to make swing changes. From there, the routine adapts to conditions. Wind, trajectory control, and shot windows all factor into how each club is used on the range. With longer clubs, the emphasis shifts again - fewer swings, more intention. Whether it’s dialing in a controlled three iron or building confidence with the driver, every shot has a purpose. Even subtle setup adjustments, like hovering the driver, are used to create more consistent strike and control.

But the most important part of the routine isn’t mechanical - it’s mental. Slowing everything down, trusting the work, and stepping onto the course with clarity and confidence.

Because the goal of a range session isn’t perfection. It’s preparation.
