The theory is the rust will help the ball get more spin coming off the face. As to when you replace them, just use them like normal until you start to get an indent in the face.

the rust is actually said to give you more back spin I believe! lots of people have the look!

certainly not a negative on performance, maybe cosmetic if you don't like it.

Back in my high school / college playing days (a decade ago now :( ) we would actually soak oil can vokeys in a salt water solution to promote rust. The rust was easily brushed off...but gave the club a noticeable more amount of "grab".

Sure, its a bit concerning that a new $150 wedge would start to rust, but its easily remedied with a wire brush, and can be slowed down by using some gun oil as a rust prohibitor... But I say let it get that fresh patina and let it eat.

I love a trusty rusty and do believe it improves spin around the green. My 56* is raw, and I've had it for two seasons now. The thing is just beautiful in its rusted state.

Just as a side note, the rust also takes away any glare.

I have one and love the look and feel of it. It's a 52 and probably my favorite Vokey in the bag. Game away and have fun with it!

It's suppose to promote more grab/spin. This all depends how you strike the ball of course. If they started to rust immediately then you had to have moisture on them and or not cleaned them after playing. I have a black finish 58° that is suppose to rust also. I clean the grooves and wipe the club after each shot so none of my clubs have rust. I did play one time in the rain and didn't wipe my sticks down after I got home out of the rain. I went to clean my clubs the next day and there was rust forming. I cleaned the clubs and the rust has not developed more.
