I was thinking recently about a 3-club tournament I played a few years back. The course was on the shorter side, roughly 5,800 yards. I decided to go with a 3-wood, 8-iron, and 54-degree wedge. I ended up using the 3-wood as a putter from longer distances and the 54-degree wedge as a putter from shorter distances.

Everyone in the event seemed to have a different strategy, which was part of the fun and really shows how much it comes down to what works for your game.

It got me curious. If you had to play 18 holes with just 3 clubs, which ones would you choose? Or if you’ve played in a similar event, what clubs did you decide to go with?

This would be a fun event/challenge to participate in. Depending on course yardage, for a longer yardage I would probably go 3wd, 7 iron, putter, for shorter yardage I would probably do 4 iron, 52-degree, putter.
  3. I would go 3 wood, 7 iron and a 52 degree wedge and use the wedge for putting! Had to think about that I’ve never played in an event like that.

Three wood, 8 iron, and putter. I tend to putt a lot from off the green because my short game is a mess, lol.

    4 hybrid, 8 iron, and a 54º wedge, probably.

There was an event like this with the Golfer's Journal Broken Tee Society Virginia chapter -- but a 5-Club. I actually took the idea and use it as a practice challenge for sim golf -- just to be/get creative. May have to try the 3-club to see how that fares!

Like others I would do 3 wood and 7 iron. My lowest club would be my 54* wedge. I almost exclusively use my wedge around the greens and out of bunkers. My twist is I think that I would putt with my 7 iron. Have never done it, but I think that if you lean the shaft forward enough (with the lower loft), it would most resemble the face of a putter. I just feel that the 3 wood would have too much bounce off the face to be able to control speed effectively. I'll have to try that out and see if it works.

That would be a fun round to play! I would go 3W, 6I, PW. Maybe.

I've done five club rounds, but not just 3. At my age, and given an appropriate length course, I'd probably go 21 degree FW, 8 iron, and putter. Would make some yardages difficult, but that is the point of a game like this.

Probably a 3 wood, 7 iron and putter

It would greatly depend upon the course. Not just overall length but whether there are any forced carries. Without length or forced carries, I would probably go with a 5-metal, 7-iron, 54* wedge. Sounds like a fun concept for an infrequent challenge!

It occurred while I was vacation, but our club did a 3 clubs + putter competition, would have loved to try it. If only 3, I would do 3 wood, 7 iron, and 54.

7 wood, 9 iron and 56. I can putt with the 9 iron.

    I would go with a 3 Hybrid, 7 Iron and 54...
