I was already fortunate to be in Arizona on escape from the winter of Iowa. My wife wanted to golf on Valentine's Day. Our foursome included another couple who are wonderful friends. So, Valentine's Day, golf, with friends and beautiful weather, what can top all this?
We approach the sixth hole and determine the yardage is 174 to the center of the green with the pin appearing slightly towards the back. Having played here before, we knew, too well, being long was trouble. I chose a 5-iron hoping to find the front of the green and a chance for birdie or par. I told myself to just make a decent swing and stay in my shoes. I barely felt the shot, the took off on a nice line, hit the front of the green and rolled until it disappeared. I immediately thought somehow it was too long. The last place I looked was the cup!
