Today, February 18th, I bought a Vokey SM11 54 degree D grind based on swing which tends to get more steep with wedges. Team Members, what are your reasons for choosing the particular grinds of your wedges and how were you able to determine which grind was best for you?

The only real way to know what grind works best for you is to experiment in real conditions. Different grasses and different bunkers can impact your choices too. I will be doing my SM11 fitting tomorrow at TPI Oceanside. I will see turf interaction and bounce from those bunkers but I also know the conditions at my home courses in Arizona will react differently. I will likely do what I did with SM10’s and own a couple of different grinds to swap around when playing different conditions.

Watch a wedge fitting with Titleist fitters and they preach ball contact between grooves 2-5 for low launch (half of club loft) and they accomplish this by finding the grind with the proper bounce that works with your swing and technique.

I too just received my Raw SM11 54° F, with a Project X 6.5. I went with just one to see if I liked it before rounding out the compliment. I went with the F grind after some personal tests and knowing that I would use it mostly on full shots, the F grind is uber forgiving for those “fuller” swings and the goal is go get better dispersion in that 70-100 yard range. My current 54° is a M grind, which is fantastic around the greens but I struggled with a bit on longer shots.

Initial Thoughts: The fit and finish, and head shape is by far my favorite out of most of the past renditions. I am a huge fan of the SM6. Having a SM6 and SM9 in the bag I was due for an update. The 7 and 8 were demoed, as well as the 10, but several factors led to me waiting.

My bag fell over in some stout wind and the wedge has a nice beauty mark which is kind of irritating, but adds to the character.

Worked with my local pro. I took his advice for what loft to use in what situation. Based on that he recommended using the M grind 58 and the S grind for my 54. The 48 is an F.
What applies to me only really applies to me. As a primary sweeper, D and K really don’t help me.

You don't choose the grind, the grind chooses you. In order to be matched with the correct one for each wedge, you will go through the shots you typically hit with that wedge, in the conditions you most frequently play, with the assistance of a knowledgeable fitter. In the end, there will be a grind that stands out from the rest based in impact location, turf interaction and sound.
