I am 54 and still relatively strong. I got fitted into a blended set of T series irons about 4 months ago. T100 9-7, T150 6 iron and T250 5-3 irons. I play a GT2 driver and 3 wood and have a TSR3 5 wood. Vokey pw, 50, 54, 58. My irons have the project X 6.5 shafts and I have X stiff shafts in my woods. I am seriously considering taking out the 3 and 4 irons and replacing them with a TSR3 21* hybrid. The gapping would be 3 degrees going from the 3 wood down to the 5 iron after I adjust the lofts on the 3 and 5 woods. I'm hoping this will be what I settle on but will always have the option to bring the 3/4 irons off the bench when needed. Does anyone have a setup close to this and how have you liked it?

What is important is what works for you. I don’t care if there is zero other players out there that share my set up. I only care that it fits my game. That said, I do like the idea of having multiple clubs to interchange within the set depending on course and weather conditions. I even do that with extra wedges to go from low bounce to high bounce grinds.

Yes of course but it's fun to hear other people's experiences. The bottom line is how it all works out on the course. I think the biggest challenge will be getting the gapping correct especially between the hybrid and 5 wood. It seems fewer and fewer people are carrying 3 and 4 irons these days. Having said that, there is something so satisfying when you hit a 3 iron pure.

Today’s 3 irons approach the loft of the 1 iron of the 70’s. And Lee Trevino said to hold a 1 iron in a lightening storm because even God can’t hit a 1 iron.

Nothing better than the feel of a pure shot. But if you find a hybrid that you can be more consistent, why not? On tour there are likely more 7 woods than 3 irons. In the bags. They’re at the top of their games and most are under 40.

This is where a good fitter can optimize your long clubs to maintain an efficient descent into greens. Trial and error without adding electronic readings is long on the error part.

I had my Titleist fitting for my irons about 4 months ago after being away from the sport for about 8 years. He liked my numbers with the 3 and 4 T250 irons but I also took us in that direction because I wanted to keep the long irons. Now my swing is coming back and much more consistent I feel like I can fine tune things a little more and give myself more options. (and make life easier) Back when I was young I carried a Taylor Made Burner Tour 2 iron and could absolutely stripe it. I'm not 30 anymore so those days are gone. I love the feel and ball flight of my 5 wood so really looking forward to exploring the hybrid route and see how that compares to the long irons and 5 wood. The possibility of going with a 7 wood over a hybrid is also an option.

Had a chance to get to the range yesterday and tried out the 21* hybrid and it felt really good. Love the ball flight and could immediately see the forgiveness on shots out toward the toe which is my miss. I think I'm on to something for sure!!
  7. Yeah, you're probably on to something. I just did something similar over the last year. I went from 10.5 TS3 driver and 15 TS3 3-wood to 12 degree GT1 driver and 18 GT1 5-wood (on my 3-woods shaft) because when I went to a local Titleist fitting, the fitter noticed that I hit either slightly up or flat on my tee shots, so I was actually losing too much spin at that loft with that head. Quite a shocking thing to be playing a 12-degree driver, but since I only swing 90-95 mph and tend to hit down, it made sense.

This last week, I finally got rid of my U500 4-iron after another fitting. I was looking for something more consistent to go between a 21 GT2 7-wood and my 5-iron and ended up in 23 GT1 hybrid to fit that gap. Never thought I'd go back to a hybrid, but it gave me the right ball speed gap and the right descent angle at about 180 to fit that space. Plus, the fitter got me into a T250 5-iron with a AMC Blue 85 graphite shaft since he suggested graphite irons might be an option in my T150s at my swing speed, but that would require me to redo my entire bag to account for the extra distance.

You just never know what will come out of hitting things until you try them.

I hear ya on this. I finally pulled my 3 iron out of the bag. Still have the 4I for the low/trouble shots but that seems to not get a lot of use either. I am looking at moving into some hybrids to take their places. Never had a 7 wood so going to start the investigations. I am old school and a tad older, so it's time to take advantage of the tech out there. Let the games begin.
