My fitting experience

  1. I was fitted late last year and I loved that I was finally getting fitted for clubs as I've always played and adjusted to playing stock clubs off the rack ever since I was a junior golf. While I loved the experience, I think there are some things wrong with it, at least from what I experienced.

-My old iron set were miz MP-32s which has a 35 degree loft in the 7 iron. The fitter tried best he could to convince me that I was hitting the Titleist T200 farther because of the technology and fitting rather than by the loft even when I brought up that my 6 iron had the same loft as the 7 iron.

-Even though I was at a golf course on the range where I could hit off of grass, their fitting sessions were done by hitting off of mats. For me, this changes my swing a bit with my irons because I tend to want to pick the ball off clean from the mat rather than make a divot and turf interaction doesn't come into play.

-I just came from playing 18 holes so I was a bit tired during my fitting and my iron shots had a slight fade to them rather than going straight which is my normal shot. So I knew I wasn't closing the club face at impact likely because I was getting tired. Because of the fade, the fitter fitted my lie angle at 2 degrees upright to correct my fade even though I told him that's not my normal shot.

Did I just get a bad fitting experience? The fitter was very nice but I felt as though I wasn't fitted properly.

  2. A lot to unpack here - I do fittings everyday and communication is key. First in regards with the loft differences - yes there is a distance advantage with the stronger lofts, but in my experience especially in the T200 line, is I am willing to bet you also hit the the T200's higher than your your higher lofted mp32's. There is a lot of technology in the multimaterial iron sets that lower the cg that to optimize trajectory you have to strengthen the loft - dual distance benefit. Secondly, with your lie angle - assuming you had std lie on your mp32's going 2* up on titleist will be about a 3.5* difference than what you are used to (miz tends to be flatter, titleist is set more upright at their std.) I always look at ball flight first, tendencies second and inherent swing flaws that can create a false reading 3rd (a hard over the top or out to in swing path will tend to get very toe heavy results, but going more upright won't change or help) lastly to confirm my findings i use a static measurement to verify or lean towards one direction if we are borderline. There should be constant communication through this process. If I am wrong about the T200's flying higher that may be more to the cleaner "pick" or thin shot with the mp32's which will increase spin and trajectory - false read, but if you pick normally then the extra tungsten and low cg in the t200's will produce a better trajectory by flattening out your ball flight. If you feel the fitting wasn't right you can always have a certified fitter check your specs and if needed you can have the lie angles adjusted by titleist or your local shop that has a qualified repair specialist- hope this helps.
  3. Helps a lot! Thanks for the detailed response. I’m a 9 handicap so I feel my swing is pretty good. So I don’t think my swing had anything to do with changing my lie angle. I’ll chalk it up to a bad fitting.
