I just bought an old 905R ...it has the UST V2 shaft and is 45" ....was wondering about cutting it to 44".....can I just trim it from the butt end?
Doc G
Sure you can trim from the butt end. But for every 1/2" that you cut, you lower the swing weight by 3 points. 3 swing weights is equal to about 6 grams of weight. So, if you're going to cut 1" off the shaft, then you would need to add back roughly 12 gr of weight to the head. By adding 12 gr of weight to the head you have effectively made the head way approximately what a 3 wood head weighs. So, to do this job completely correctly, you'd trim the tip to what the manufacturer suggests for a 3 wood, normally 1/2" and then trim the other 1/2" from the butt and you can use tip weights and tungsten powder to bring the weight back up or you can also use lead tape but it takes a lot of lead tape to get to 12 gr. Hope this helps and have some fun.

Hello Jim, I have this shaft in multiple Titleist Drivers and have trimmed from Butt End with no dramatic flex issues as I use it in X flex. This shaft (V2) is super stiff in the tip and I would not recommend tipping it to much from the head as It will not stay same flex it gets much stiffer. Hope that helps. jp

Better to trim from butt. Has less effect on stiffening vs trimming tip.
You also want to use a lighter grip and/or heavier head weights. You would 12g more weight in the head to compensate for loss of swingweight. Changing to a Winn Lite Dri-Tac in the grip also restores the swingweight the same amount. A Winn Excel RF grip and 8 grams additional weight in the head does the same thing.
2g change in head weight = 1 swingweight point and 5g change in grip weight = 1 swingweight point. Lamkin Crossline or Golf Pride Tour Velvet standard = 52g. Golf Pride 25 = 25g. Winn Lite Dri Tac std = 23g (oversize = 26g). Winn Excel RF = 42g.
