On December 26, 2013 I was at the office trying to work. The phone was not ringing and I was down because business was so bad. My friend Jay Hancock called me to ask if I wanted to play golf that afternoon. Of course I said yes thinking it would help my feelings.
We teed off at Great Southwest Golf Club in Grand Prairie Texas about 1:30. The weather was beautiful and sunny (upper 50’s). Jim Welch joined us at the turn on number 10. The course was crowded and a little slow.
On hole #17 (par 3) we caught up with a threesome in front of us. We joked and chatted while waiting on the group ahead of them that were putting the hole. I made the statement that out of the six of us you would think at least one person would hit a hole in one.
The threesome in front of us teed off and moved forward. When it was our turn Jay and Jim hit before me. They both were on the green. I stepped up and hit the shot of my life!
Everything was perfect. Everything felt perfect.
My clubface hit the ball so perfectly that I could barely feel the ball impact. Pure sweet spot contact. The ball climbed in the air straight for the hole. I knew in my mind that it could definitely hit the hole. The ball hit the green and rolled toward the hole eventually disappearing from our site which I thought was because of the distance (175 yards).
Everyone congratulated me on such a pretty shot and we got into our carts proceeding to the green. When we arrive at the green only two balls could be seen. Jay said that maybe my ball went over the back of the green. I knew better than that. It was the longest walk to the hole in all my life.
As I peered down into the cup….there was my ball in the bottom of the cup resting next to the flag stick. I jumped straight up and let out a loud whistle. High fives all around. Jay and Jim were so excited for me. Jim insisted on us taking our time to take pictures of the moment insisting that the group behind us could just wait.
It was a priceless moment in my life. It was so thrilling. I wished the feeling would never end.
I met the group that was ahead of us on the number 18 tee box. They were thrilled with congratulations from all. I bogied hole 18.
