Playing on the last night of the summer league with a sub for my sub and 2 other guys I had never played with before. My partner and I were going along pretty well, him making a few birdies and me taking advantage of my strokes on a couple of holes. And then we came to #7, which was actually our 8th hole as it was a shotgun start and we teed off on 9 as our first.
As we approached the tee box I was steaming after missing an easy 4 footer on the previous hole for a net birdie. He told me to forget it and that this was "my hole". As it was, I pulled 6-iron from 158 and hit a decent looking shot dead into the low evening sun. It looked good off the club but the sun was too bright for any of us to see exactly how it ended up. My partner provided the standard "it's in the hole" commentary with a derisive laugh.
They all hit good balls as well, so when we drove up to the green only to see 3 balls, I have to admit that I was optimistic. However there was a ball on the fringe directly behind the pin which I thought could easily be mine. When I got closer to the green I could see that that ball was my partners as he had a big red dot on his Titleist which I could see from 10 feet away.
At that point I basically tip-toed from the back of the green to the center cut pin and peeked over the edge of the hole when I got close enough. And there she was, a Titleist Pro V1 with a black 2 staring up at me. Our group and then the league celebrated in traditional style with me covering the tab. The golf god's were with me however as we won the weekly pot for the league and I got the only skin.
