LIGHTER SHAFTS IN WEDGES?

  1. I've been researching different shafts in place of the standard Dynamic Gold S200 for the Vokeys I'm considering (48, 54 and 60). The Tensei graphite shafts in my AP1s will be Regular Flex and will weigh 69 grams.

Question #1 - In order to stay consistent with the Flex in the irons, does it make sense to consider going with R300?

Question #2 - The Dynamic Gold shafts weigh around 130 grams. There is a DG SL that weighs 104 grams. I could stay with R300 in that shaft which will still be heavier then the iron shafts but they will be "lighter and softer" than the DG S200.

Question #3 - Are the DG SLs even available?

    Any thoughts...........

When I do custom fittings, I will sometimes have the same shafts in wedges as in the irons (haven't done a lot of graphite shafts, though). That way, the weight and feel should be similar to the iron set. You can first consider the set matching gap wedges to the AP1s (48*, 53*) if you tend to mostly use full swings, then add the SM7 you need for your distances/shots.

I think having flexes to be similar to your irons might be appropriate, too. Even though the DG SL is not offered (may not be available even through TT), there are plenty of light weight steel shafts to select from. Titleist now has some wedge fitting heads and shafts, so perhaps a visit to your local fitter would help you answer some questions.

Good luck. Take advantage of the fitting opportunities that are available!

    Bill,
I believe that only the Tensei wedge shafts are 69 grams. The rest of the Tensei regular flex shafts are 57 to 60 grams. I have 716 AP1s with Kuro Kage regular flex graphite shafts and a 60 degree Vokey with the same shaft. I like all my irons to feel pretty much the same.

Sounds like you researched a lot of options. My suggestion would be to find a Titleist Thursday where you can demo some of your ideas. My initial thoughts on your ideas:
#1 - It might make sense to go a bit stiffer in the wedges you would take "full" shots with and go a touch easier on the flex on the wedges you take partial shots with.
#2 - A lot of people like heavy wedge shafts (myself included) and you might not like "lighter" wedges. A DG SL in R300 would not necessarily be softer than the S200. Try it at a Titleist Thursday. But what I can say is that the DG SL tends to have a lower flight than the regular DG's.
    #3 - Yes I believe they are.
    Good luck!
  5. Usually shafts in wedges are a bit heavier. My fitter fit me into Modus 105s for irons and 120s for my wedges. Like the other post said, go to a Titleist Thursday and see what the fitter has to say.

Hi Bill, Since the 48 and maybe even the 54 are going to be used for full shot swings, putting the Tensei Red R flex shafts in those wedges will give you a consistency of feel as well as provide similar distance gaps.
2 & 3) The DGSL shafts were withdrawn from sales with us and might not be the best option as they would not only feel heavier, but stiffer as well.
Check out the XP 90, or even an NS PRO 950 both of which are no upcharge options. The XP 90 will swingweight out heavier than the NS Pro due to the balance of weight in that shaft.
As John and Thomas said, a Titleist Thursday would be a good place to start as they will have the fitting wedges and you will be able to try a couple with lighter shafts.

I personally like the same shafts in all my irons including my wedges but it’s personal preference.

Think Mr Jordan Spieth has X Flex shafted irons and S Flex shafted wedged - this is obviously because of feel and what ball flight he is seeking...
  9. I was fitted on Saturday for the SM7s with True Temper AMT Black R300 shafts - these are lighter than standard and made a big difference for me

For what it's worth, I was fitted for KBS tour 120 stiff shafts in my irons and I chose to continue that in my wedges. For my 51 and 56 they are great but I'm considering going for a much lighter shaft in my 60. I just feel that the shaft is too heavy for those delicate chips around the green. Might be something to keep in mind.

I went with lighter shafts in my custom Vokeys through Wedgeworks that are in my bag this year. Went with the True Temper AMT shaft which matches my AMT shafts in the AP3s in my bag.

I really like the change and I think I have gotten better with full swing shots-I don't feel like I am working as hard swinging the club-my old Vokeys with the heavy Dynamic Gold shafts felt so, well, heavy on full swings.

Ironically, and I'm not sure if there is a connection, I feel like I have struggled this year on short little feel shots around the green.

i have a set of DG Spinner shafts in my wedges that i love. they give me a nice low(ish) ball flight with stop and drop. They won't provide dramatic spin if you don't swing it well, but they definitely help a little.
