I've been improving my flop shot quite a bit over the past few months, and would like to get a Vokey that is great for these types of shots when played.

I've been looking at the M and L grinds, but I know that bounce plays a big role in these types of shots. I've also heard that the 4* bounce on the L grind would not necessarily be the best option.

Let me know what you guys think!

Dave

M, K and L. I play M and K 2* strong.
My main weapons for those kinds of shots are my 60-14K (bent to 58) and 64W. I can get under the ball better on a tight lie with the K vs the M grind. T grind is a good one for flop shots too. I play a 54-10S 2* strong and do OK on flop shots also. Unfortunately, the 60-04T doesn't come in jet black.

RE: Best Vokey Grind for Flop Shot?

I have a 60M and can flop it fine in traditional conditions. A lot of pros are switching to the 60.04 T grind. Best lob for tight lies. I've heard so many good things about it, I feel like they should include it in the SM9 lineup outside of wedge works.

I have recently moved to Vokey SM7 50-14F, 54-08M and 58-08M to improve my wedge play and gapping. I had them specially built with Recoil F4 shafts (as used in my irons) and set at D2/3. Delighted with the move except for the 58M. For me the 58M is great for full or half shots and flop shots where there is a bit of ground under the ball. However I have come from an old png Eye2 gorge wedge which I found so versatile from all types of lies around the green whether fluffy sand, soft wet or hard pan or firm ground. With the Eye 2 I could set my hands low and lay the face wide open to create much more bounce when needed than with the 58-08M. I think the TM high toe follows a similar path.

RE: Best Vokey Grind for Flop Shot?

I have hit some absolutely nasty flops over trees 50 yards of the pin with the 60.04 L grind. Are you a digger or a sweeper. For me the real question is course conditions.Firm or soft? I think players get caught up in the loft, bounce and grind when choosing a wedge and forget about the course conditions they normally play, and if those conditions are well suited to their wedge of choice.

I played an S grind 54 in the SM7s but switched to the D grind in my SM8 54. It offers me much more opportunity for opening the clubface to produce different types of shots than my old 54.10 S grind did. (Which, btw, I was reluctant to change, I liked it so much at the time.) I used it for a lot of square, or slightly open-faced chipping and pitchipping shots, but I mostly used my 58.12D for the bulk of longer, higher pitch shots that I wanted to stick very close to where I landed them. I also have an M grind 60 and 62. Both are phenomenal on open-faced high flopitches and flops from short grass/tight lies. When I play the 60, I will use it for full and three-quarter square-faced approach shots, but when the 62 is in the bag, I rarely use it for that type of shot. Mostly just greenside touch shots, but I can do a lot with it in those situations.

On the Vokey site it states, "The M Grind, Voke’s favorite, is designed for players that like to rotate the club face open and closed to manufacture shots around the green. Ideal for players with a shallower, more sweeping swing type who play shots from a variety of clubface positions." He personally states it's the most versatile. He also calls the D Grind the high bounce version of the M grind. Very similar grind, just in a higher bounce package.

About the S grind, the site states, "The S Grind features a full sole that has been narrowed by a trailing edge grind, giving it a faster feel through the turf. The S Grind is best for neutral to firm conditions and for players that like to control loft with their hands ahead or behind the ball." It's also mentioned that it is ideal for square-faced shots. Bob personally says it's a "very, very versatile wedge," as well.

Both are excellent in my opinion. Having played both grinds extensively, I would agree with the Vokey description of each of them. Nonetheless, for MY swing, the M grind (and D for that matter) give me more flexibility and options for the conditions I generally play in.

Now, when it's muddy, as it will definitely be when the snow melts here next week, the M grind wedges with 8* of bounce, or even the 12* D grind isn't going to be enough! I have an SM7 58.14K around here I can throw in the bag for that, if necessary.

RE: Best Vokey Grind for Flop Shot?
It depends if youre a Digger, Neutral or Swinger.. With the heel and toe relief on these grinds you can open up the face as much as you like which is essential to the flop shot. This is also an excellent all-around grind for many uses. You may want to find a retailer who has all of the different grinds available as demo clubs to try them all out in the conditions you are used to playing in. If you are playing more lush courses then you can go with 60/08. I think Vokey has a 62 degree wedge available now. This might be the best option if you are playing a lot of courses with elevated greens and you have game.
