St. Andrews as a Single

Traveling in May to St. Andrews to visit my daughter who is studying abroad this semester. It sounds like the courses at St. Andrews rely on the starters to place singles with groups about to go off. So it appears you don't have a great sense of if/when you'll go off. Any tips or insight is appreciated for course selection as a single and how you deal with uncertain tee times & warm-up.

I have been successful in the 48hr 2+ person ballot twice now, in 2018 and last year, 2025. 2018 was in April so def not peak season, can't recall the day, but last year we stayed in StA for a week during July. We'd heard Thursdays and Saturdays were generally your best chance. We were successful as a two on the Thursday and another of our party selected as a single on the Saturday, so it seemed to ring true. I was #11 on the singles draw on the Wednesday, thought I may have had a chance, but only got down to 6. The starters did make the comment in the morning that there were quite a few tour companies booked in that day so they felt the chances were low.

Not sure re: the Old Course Hotel having some sway in the ballot selection, doesn't hurt to know people... ;)
Currently, the 48 hour ballot is online and can only be entered as a group of 2/3/4. No singles.
The single ballot must be entered in person at either the starters hut or the new Club House, and they take a picture upon entering, so you can't enter for someone else.

Was interesting being No.11 and just hanging out at the hut for an hour or so to get an understanding of likelihood for the day, the No. of people that just turned up seeing if there were any spots, trying to sweet talk the starters and even wanting to pay whatever for a round. The starters were very professional in their dealings. :)

Good to know lining up at 4:30 is no longer an option. Curious if there are days of the week with better odds on getting lucky. If there 20 slots a day and the pool ran from 25 to 80, I’d shoot for the 20 of 25 day. I was led to believe lottery entry from The Old Course Hotel entrants were luckier than others. At least when I stayed at the Hotel, they handled submitting my name and I got on. That was 2018. The world changed after COVID.

Played the Old Course twice as a single...was paired with other threesomes each time, once with two St. Andrews University team golfers and their coach. One of the more memorable rounds of my life. So it is possible if you are diligent and a bit lucky. But I agree with Waz...New or Eden are good options and while not the Old Course, are OK alternatives if it doesn't work out getting on the Old. Yeah no lining up option anymore, you need to turn up day before in person and enter the singles ballot. If you are successful you will find out at about 5:30pm that day (i.e day before you'll play). If you book at any of the other StA courses they will happily cancel or move your booking at those courses if you are successful in the ballot.

Its not exactly the same, but book to play New or Eden would be my suggestion. Both have holes that play right along The Old so you get a little of the feels.

Still waiting on mine as well. Played no2 twice and watched my buddy sink a 20' birdie putt on 17 to get a deuce coin, and then watched my little brother drain a long birdie putt on 18 in front of a million people out on the veranda. He said that was worth more than the coin haha.

Just played Pinehurst 2, 4, 7, and the Cradle.

2026 Pro v 1x left dash scored very well. Greens firm but the new left – had plenty of check and release on the greens..

There are many courses in the area. Carolina National is close by but I would recommend heading south a few miles to the Sunset Beach area where a plethora of options exist. Thistle, The Pearl, Oyster Bay and Sea Trail are all nice resort course options. Explore some of the reviews on Golf Advisor or another site and find what fits your druthers. Great area for golf. Have a great trip.

Played Pebble Beach/Pasatiempo in 2023; St. Andrews/Kingsbarns/Carnoustie in 2024; SW Ireland/Old Head/Lahinch in 2025; heading to Portrush/County Down/Portmarnock in 2026.

Trying to get to Bandon, but the lottery has not been good to me (p.s. any ideas how I can increase my chances?).

Probably back to Pinehurst in 2027.

if things work out, will be hitting Arcadia Bluffs in the fall. i think that’s the course i’ve always wanted to play the most, even more than Pebble. had to cancel last year due to shoulder injury so let’s hope things work out this year.

You might consider Tierra Verde golf course in Arlington.....a wonderful layout and design. Try Hawks Creek in Ft. Worth and in Dallas consider Cedar Crest and Dallas Golf Club (does not get a lot of play but it is a wonderfully designed course). Designed by A.W. Tillinghast but has since been modified. Still a great layout. The Golf Club of Dallas is also a good layout and in good shape.

This has been on my bucket list for a while, now, and I finally got it booked: I get to tour Ball Plant #3 in Fall River!

I don't know a thing about what happens there, except I hope there's a gift shop.

Texas Star is a good one in what I would call the upper mid-tier courses. Also close to Arlington. Fossil Creek or Sky Creek Ranch not too far either. Tour 18 or The Tribute are unique as they copy famous golf holes. The two courses at Bear Creek next to the airport are not bad. Cowboy Club or TX Rangers courses if budget is not an issue. All good, have fun!

I use the Titleist Club Glove travel bag with Stiff Arm and never had any issues. I always remove the wood heads and add extra towels around the club heads for added protection

I haven't traveled with clubs in a long time, but I have an opportunity coming next month. In the past I used a simple canvas bag with my own improvisations - like lots of towels for padding and a homemade version of a "stiff arm" to protect the shafts.

I like my clubs much more these days :) and want better protection. I assume a hard case would provide better protection, but could be a challenge to fit into a rental car. Is it safe to travel with today's soft travel cases like the Titleist club glove travel cover?

I’ve used a Club Glove case for both air travel and shipping clubs via ShipSticks without any issues. Remove club heads, protect the shaft tips, provide plenty of padding with towels and bubble wrap, use a stiff arm device. That being said, I have more recently purchased an SKB hard case for added protection and peace of mind.

portmarnock is the #1 choice. The Island is the #2 choice and #3 is Baltray and #4 would be Royal Dublin.

All would be a great day out on the links. But go in that order.
