I am traveling to Ireland for a work conference and will have one day to golf. What are some suggestions for courses that won’t break the bank and are still going to give me a memorable Ireland golf experience? I was looking at Portmarnock

RE: Golf in Ireland

If you are in the general dublin location I'd recommend the European club. Should be considerably cheaper than portmarnock and in my opinion one of the best if not the best links course in irealnd. A real golf test if the wind is blowing

RE: Golf in Ireland

Ireland is bigger than Rhode Island. If you only have one day and you are based in Dublin, then you may want to look from the owner end of Northern Ireland to north of Waterford for a links style course. If you are near Shannon, there are many choices on the west coast. Narrowing the area will help with recommendations.

My wife and I played Belmullet listed in A Course Called Ireland. He rated it well. I agree. But its location at the end of County Mayo is not near anything. My wife topped out at 80-90 yards, so we played 1 parkland and 3 links courses. And stayed under 100 Euros per player. That pretty rules out the courses better known on travel tours.

RE: Golf in Ireland

Where are you going to be based? Tom Coyne's a course called Ireland should give you some inspiration. Heading over west you could take in some terrific courses as well as sampling some of the best of Ireland's hospitality. Dooks and Lahinch two to look out for.

RE: Golf in Ireland

Truly memorable golf and "wont break the bank" don't usually go hand in hand.

Unless you're willing to pay 200 euro+, you won't be playing any of the world top 200. That being said....there is a really great option just a few minutes north of Dublin called Corballis Links. 35 Euro on the weekend, 30 on weekdays. Gives you that 'playing in amongst the dunes' that places like Carne and Ballybunion are so famous for, but without the 4 hour drive for Carne and the pricey tee time for Ballybunion. Give it a look!

RE: Golf in Ireland

I realize the green fees can be rather steep but when you will be there again and how often do you get to play great courses?
Since it is a business trip, Most of your trip to Dublin is already paid for!!
My suggestions, mirror Dale's. Porrtmornock, County Louth and The Island course.

RE: Golf in Ireland

Any of the most popular and historic will set you back but the way I see it, it’s a memory that will last much longer than the money I would eventually spend on food, gas, etc. I guess you are going to be in Dublin? If so, a day trip to Portmarnock, The Island GC, Royal Dublin, County Louth, or The European Club would be my suggestions. Those are all Links style courses which are what most travelers to Ireland or Scotland want to play. There are some good Parkland style courses but you won’t get that unique feel you are probably looking to have.

RE: Golf in Ireland

Think most of us who have gone to Ireland whether it be in Northern or Southern parts have gone on packages, which is the best way to go. That way we would be getting better rates. I would venture to say that going the way you are would most likely be expensive unless the pro at your club might have a contact in that area. Like being a daily rate at Pebble Beach or The Ocean Course at Kiawah. Which can run over $600 here in the states.
