Relaxed feeling over the ball.

  1. I golf a lot, 3 to 4 times a week and have consistency problems. I notice occasionally that I am extremely comfortable over the ball and feel like I am going to hit a good shot and usually do. On other shots, it's not that I am uncomfortable over the ball, it's just not that same feeling. Any ideas on how to reproduce that comfortable feeling over the ball on a more regular basis?

I get that same feeling sometimes. For me it's like I can't stay focussed on the ball or I hurry the shot. I have found that if I run or exercise(get the heart rate up and then when it falls) I feel more relaxed and don't have my issues when standing over the ball. Not sayin it will work for you but it does for me.
  3. I think you need to take notice of when that feeling comes up to find the best way to work through it.

Is it on uneven lies, w/ longer approach shots, w/ draw/fade required shot shapes? If you can better narrow it down to certain scenarios, you can focus/practice those so you're more comfortable in those specific situations.

If you feel this comes up randomly throughout the round, the best way to maintain focus/feel is to build a meticulous pre-shot routine, and follow it religiously. If you go through your entire routine every single time... that should bring you into focus shot, after shot, after shot.

Good question, Randy. Without having to go through your pro/swing teacher or anything much about you, I just want you to check on your set up. Most often times when you are feeling comfortable over the ball is because of your set up is most likely correct. And it feels awkward almost when it's not. It's extremely important in a routine (if you follow one) to incorporate a set up routine that you follow in each shot. In it, may also include alignment and ball position depending on the shot you'll be attempting or setting up for. It's easy to get lost out there when there isn't any routine that can lead you back to a proper set up. You'll need to verify this information with your swing pro/teacher.

    Good luck.

I think it's a common problem in golf. I don't think anyone feels the same over every shot including putts. And I mean everyone from the average player to Justin Thomas. All other sports are played on a flat symmetrical surface and with the exception of outfield fence distances in baseball, the playing surface dimensions are the same, game after game. Golf holes are like snowflakes, no two are alike. Uphill, downhill lies. Ball above or below your feet. Trees and hazards. Bunker shots with the same problems plus "fried egg" and ball under the lip. Putts with varying speeds, undulations and breaks. We're all human, not a bunch of "Iron Byron" swing machines, so just try your best.

Like the others said, a consistent pre-shot routine can help with this. Stick to the basics, ie alignment, posture, etc because if you aren't in a position to make a good swing, you definitely won't feel good over the ball.

Routine... Alignment, Posture, etc, if you aren't in a position to make a good swing your body will definitely let you know. When you are feeling off, double check these things. It works for me :)
