The Open Championship is off & running and with it two story lines I could live without...the '99 Open Championship & Jean Van de Velde and the TW Tracker. How do the rest of you feel about these two story lines?

  2. I’m with you on the story of Van de Velde and the 99 Open, we’ve heard the story enough. As for Tiger...considering the conditions, I think he has as strong a chance as anyone. It sound like he could play this golf course the way he played Hoylake and won. Drive it 300 yards in the fairway with that 2 iron stinger.

I agree ... less Vandevelde and more Hogan. The problem is that there is little if no video or film from that era so it makes it hard for television, video streaming, etc. to focus on Hogan's incredible accomplishment in 1953. It would typically have to be a montage of photos and some commentary on the historic event. Regardless, it seems to me that we are losing touch with this incredible accomplishment and that future generations will become more ignorant of this feat. Yet, apart from Tiger's "Slam", Hogan's season of 1953 is the only other significant season in the modern period (being the steel shafted, modern club era). Anyway, just my own 2 cents.

10000000% agree. I mean they're already over doing it with TW.. Driving me NUTS! And '99 was SO LONG AGO. Show it once and move on... past is the past.. Just like a bad golf game :)

Love the Open though! Always fun to watch...

I do find it interesting how Paul Lawrie has had to deal with the win all these years. Its kind of like Stewart Cink's win in 2009. We remember that Watson could have been the oldest winner and almost fault Cink for not chunking it during the playoff for the good of the game. Lawrie will hardly be remembered for winning in 99, but JVdV will always be remembered for that loss.

I dunno... Vandevelde's collapse was nothing short of epic, and it happened at Carnoustie. I totally get why they'll relive this moment- especially this week. I hope they also show some of Padraig's highlights too. His 2007 Sunday charge and coming back after a double on 18 to win in a playoff against a guy who's lead all week is a huge deal.

Now I am in complete agreement that the TW watch has gotten out of hand. They'll show him dust the dirt off his street shoes in the parking lot while guys are out there making birdies.

I believe Paul Laurie came from 10 shots back to get into the playoff. That is an amazing feat. On Sunday at The Open their are a lot of players who have a shot at winning given the possible wind conditions that day. It should be fun to watch
