Welllll, on a recent outing this is what happened, your thoughts.......

I started fine, pared first hole, then blew up 3 holes in front nine shot 51. Buddies back was hurting him, he said lets play up, I'm hurting, so we moved to "Gold" tees on the back nine. Lo and behold 2 pars, bogey golf for the rest, for a 43, 94 overall.

I'm not 70 yet so my regular group won't let me play from the "Gold". So should I play from the Gold just to shoot better and start to enjoy myself more, or do I play back and CHALLENGE myself and lick my wounds. No matter what either tees are fun, but a debacle to figure out which tees to play to make others happy. $$$$ bets, on the line, very small on ,25 per hole for fun.

I'd like to get strokes, but they won't give any.... that's golf.

  2. Play the tees that give you the most enjoyment. Much rather be putting for birdie than fighting to save par or bogey. More people should play from the tees that suit them. Really a no brainer.

Well the general rule for speedy play here in Kansas "If you can't reach it in regulation without hitting a hybrid or fairway wood then you should move up a set of tees".

As for your question: play what makes you happy providing you are not working on a handicap to use in tournament play. Then moving up will actually hurt you in a tournament with a handicap because you can't shoot that score from your correct tees.

I've played skins where we use a 3 hole rotation. every 3rd hole we play from the golds, Reds & whites. it's fun and makes it more interesting when skins carry over to a gold or red tee box.

Golf is about getting out and having fun, walking a course for some exercise & seeing some fun nature near or on the course. wonderful sunrises & sunsets.

I think you should play the next round from the back tees and see how that goes.

Play the tees that give you the most enjoyment. We don't do this for a living so why make it a chore.
  6. You are not getting paid to play. Play from the tees that make it most fun.
  7. I say enjoy from the gold sometimes but stay with the black with your friends. Challenging and fun

Since you enjoy the game playing from either tees, play from the tees you feel like playing from. No matter what you shoot, you can always find positives in your round.

Hey worm, its not up to your regular group. That is why theres a rating and handicap system. If its easier on you and more enjoyable then you should play wherever you want.

I say play the set of tees that will give you an opportunity to play well and enjoy the day. Your handicap will be adjusted accordingly based upon the tees you play.

I am 72. Played for 60 years from a 3 to a 12. Golf is always a challenge no matter what distance so pick a tee that gives you a chance to be competitive but also have fun.

I also play with seniors and when they play for high stakes as he has mentioned, twenty five cents per hole, they stand their ground on giving strokes regardless of handicap. It is kinda of every person for themselves. Some do not even have a handicap. I learned how to stop that I do not bet with them. It is not the money, because the would argue even if it were a dime, it is because handicaps are designed to even the game. If you are 65 in our men's senior league you can move up to the golds. If you are a super senior 75 plus you have the option to move up to the reds. That is just too short on our course. Better players do not like to give strokes, they like the odds in their favor. Know when to recognize a hustle regardless of the amount of money. I do understand his concern.
If you want to play for more than a quarter at our Muni they act like it is a hundred dollars and go into panic mode. I personally play golf for the fun of it, because there is just too much arguing and disputes when betting at our age (75) by most golfers.

If it's just me and 3 other strangers, I'll play whatever tees the group is playing. If it's me and no one else, I'll play the tees that will be the most challenging for me (middle or back, doesn't matter); I use the listed course rating to determine which tees to use and my objective is to use the tees that are rated as close to the par rating for the course. For example, if the back tees are rated at 74.2, the middle are rated at 71.3 and it's a par 72 course, I'll play the middle tees. The important thing, is to make sure I keep to a 4 hour pace to complete the round.
