Physically not possible without a difference in loft. OR, testing into a 20 plus mph wind where overspinning could cause ball to balloon into the wind, but even in this case, probably only 10 yard or under difference with same lofted club.

I think all of these perspectives are interesting. There’s no doubt that I’m getting the shafts changed, and of course it’ll be through a fitting. I just was curious about whether I’m experiencing anything similar to anyone else.

I went from a 135 PW without 100% effort to 110/115 with the PX shaft. With the Project X shaft, I have to alter my swing to load the shaft to get that distance, which requires a much faster tempo.

Don’t get me wrong, I could make do…I just don’t want to. . I typically shoot between 74-78 and that’s with the Project X shafts. However, I’d rather not tee up to a 190 yd par 3 with a 5W or a 140 par 3 with a 7 iron.

Now, I also have to answer the question “do I benefit, i.e control training, if I “stick” with them (haha)? I have seen improvement with my wedges and woods since playing these shafts (I have Tensei Blue in my woods and DG S300 in my wedges). ‍♂️

Project X 5.0 is considered Regular. But keep in mind Project X reg is different than a KBS. There is no industry standard. You should also not the PX 5.0 is 110g: low launch.

My current set is 620 Combo; 7-P MB; 4-6 CB. Was fitted with PX 5.0.

For me the MB allows me to hit the yardages I want. My 8 iron I want to go a certain distance, same with 6 and 7.

It is rare you see a reg in MB but we are all different with different abilities. A good fitter will guide you thru the process, and give recommendations.

I keep hearing that the Project X shafts are a little bit different than led on to be. I keep hearing from fitters that:
5.5= stiff
6.0= stiff plus
6.5= x stiff
Any one able to confirm or relate to this?

I’ve been playing hard step 6.0 for years and absolutely love them.

OK, that makes a little more sense, but still a little perplexing on the massive distance loss. VR Pro Combo sets are no walk in the park either, definitely a players iron.
Assuming you had the 1-piece forged the P Wedge is 47' so no gain there over the 620's. If you had the hollow head "VR Pro Cavity" then that P Wedge is 45' so you's pick up half a clubs distance there.

I'm going to say the smooth "Boom Boom" style transition is what killed your distance. You weren't able to time/load that profile of shaft properly. You may benefit more from a Dynamic Gold style profile. Where you by chance playing S300's prior? Likely the stock shaft in the VR Pros.

If so, they're a lot less stout in the handle which most people whom have a smoother transition will benefit from. Gives you a little more feel.

I've always said, find the shaft that fits your swing. Don't find the swing that suites your shaft. You're body will thank you!

I've got X6.0's in my 620's as well. Actually, all of my irons and wedges have X6.0's.

I tested the LZ's, X100, S300/400 over the years but always seem to find myself back with the OG Rifles. I found the LZ played stiffer then the X. The LZ6.0 played more like a X6.5 to me, just lighter.

I had the Project X 6.0 Stiff and i had the 5.0 in my old AP2:s. I have had soooooo much problem with 6.0, i lost the stability of the shots. So i have now done the move to Graphite and it is the best move ever. I have now gained 5 yards. I hit my i7 165 meters. If i would be you i would try to change one club and make your move after that!

So the 6.0 PX shaft is stiff? Correct? That would make sense because the PX 5.5 is the regular. I've never heard of a 5.0 unless possibly it's a senior shaft, which would be more flexible than a regular.

That's interesting to read. As Alex E asked, what clubs were you playing before the 620 MBs?

Which irons are you losing the most distance with? The long irons? Mid to short? Or all? I would think that the long irons would be the easiest to lose the most distance as those are a lot harder to hit and if you don't hit the sweet spot with enough speed, you could easily lose 20 plus yards.

The 620 MBs are traditional lofts, so the PW could be about 3-4 degrees weaker than some other PWs that are on the market. They are also a single forged piece of metal, as other clubs are hollow with some type of filler to help provide some trampoline affect. I would say that I lose maybe 5 yards with a MB compared to some other clubs, but the biggest difference is on the mis-hits.

Project X 5.0 would be considered Regular flex (5.5 is R+, 6.0 is stiff, 6.5 is X and 7.0 is X+). I don't think I've even seen a set of MBs with 5.0 or regular flex shafts before, that's pretty rare.

There are a lot of factors to consider when looking at distance lose when moving from one club to another. I would suggest to start trying to narrow down the differences between your previous set and the 620 MBs and see what could be causing the distance lose.

If you still love the 620 MBs, I'd recommend going to get a retro fitting, bringing in those irons to a fitter and then have them fit you again with the proper shaft and then they and re-shaft your irons.

Hope you get this sorted out as the 620 MBs are great irons.

These were gifted to me, so I've been tolerating the issue and playing around it; however, you can bet your butt that I'm getting them re-shafted after a fitting. By all means, I was not playing pure blades before (swoosh VR Pro Combo) and while I expected a loss of distance, I did not expect THAT much. I have a Freddy Couples tempo, but these shafts are geared for fast-tempo players. That's what it took for me to get the distance I was used to. It's just not how I like to play . . .

i play 620s too, but with project X 6.0. The clubs are going to generate lots of spin, fly high and hold the green like nothing else. My PW is my 110 yard club.

You may want to explore a shaft like the project X LS, but they start in the 6.0 range.

What were you playing before the 620Ms with X5.0 shafts? Were they also 1-piece forged irons, or hollow head?

I cant say I've ever lost 20 yards from an iron shaft alone. Perhaps some dispersion, but never that much distance. What did you do at the range to find the extra 20 yards, it would have to be either speed or strike location.

Its my opinion that if you're gaming blades, you should be getting fit for you shafts.

I experienced something similar. I was used to purchasing used clubs and "deal with the shaft" that was in the club because I was being cheap. I seen an article that said pro golfers do not buy irons off the shelf and neither should you. It made me think as much as I play(100+ rounds a year) I am hurting myself. Ever since that article I have been fitted for every club I've purchased ever since. It has made a huge difference in every aspect of my game in my opinion. Even wedges and putter. You may want to demo an iron similar to yours with different shafts and see if the shaft is the problem. The Project X 5.0 are a R+ not stiff. Hope this helps!!
