Everything you've said there is what a good fitter will love to hear.

Nobody could possibly give you an answer on what iron/shaft/grip you need unless they see your swing and ball flight.

A qualified fitter would be the most qualified to do this.

Depending on where you're based, I'd try a demo day and also a golf shop and hit everything you can. Salesman tends to push either old stock or premium clubs. You know your game already, so that's a positive. A lot of better nowadays have their lofts jacket up, so a 7 iron can go as long as a strong 6 iron.

Last: if you do have a coach at the moment, borrow some clubs off him. It's hard to figure out new gear when you are tweaking your swing so try to focus on one thing at a time.

I know it isn't straightforward, but trust me, I've been there.

Hey Nolan ... nice to hear that you're back into golf. I really like your focus and how serious you are in wanting to improve your skills and your play.

Given your comments in your posting, I would strongly suggest that you take the time and see a certified Titleist Fitter. I don't know if they all have access to Trackman or not, but I would suggest that you see one that does. Ideally, they will also have an outdoor range area for you so that you can get a good feel for turf interaction with the irons too.

Proceeding in this manner will allow you to get custom fit for your irons ... both in terms of grip size, length, lie angles (flat, upright, etc.) and with the Trackman, some feedback in terms of ball flight, spin rates, distance, etc.. This will give you some good feedback on the different clubs (ie: AP1, AP3 clubs, etc.).

I've gone to our Regional Titleist Fitting centre and it has been very beneficial and definitely worth the time in terms of getting the best fit for me.

You really need to get fitted. It makes such a difference, and it’s fun to tinker with all the different equipment. I’m the exact same build as you so we can usually get away with buying standard clubs off the rack regarding length. However, I would’ve never known that I needed upright adjusted clubs without a fitting...just sayin. That being said, I think the Ap1’s or even Ap3’s would work great for you. The Ap1’s are so versatile with forgiveness, distance, looks, etc. These will definitely allow you to develop your game. Happy hunting! Any other questions? Definitely go see a Titleist fitter. I had a 15 year old set of 822's which I bought new but finally decided to upgrade last year. The fitter noticed I needed clubs 2 degrees flatter than standard. I hit the ball more consistently now, when I'm actually playing, and took a couple of shots off my handicap in a matter of weeks.

I'm now down to 12.6. I went for C16's 4i to W, addd a 54 Vokey and kept my old 60 Vokey and 716 T-MB 2 iron. Also added a 917 driver and 3 wood.
