    I was wondering what the approach of Titleist is to balance the spine of the shaft for the 917 driver with the head. I have been struggling getting comfortable with the stock Diamana Blue Board shaft for my 917 D2 driver. I had my local golf shop check whether the spine of the shaft was in balance with the head. I have a six year old driver from another company that I really have liked the feel. The test on that driver found the spine to be perfectly balanced with the head. In checking the 917 D2 driver, there was a definite wobble in the head when tested for the spine balancing. I have been told that it is not uncommon to find that the construction of drivers, do not test for spine balancing. The result of the shaft not being in balance with the head can cause the head to try to balance itself once it is loaded in backswing and cause the head to move off center in the downswing. If anyone else has experienced this situation, I'd be curious what you did to remedy this situation. I am probably looking of buying a new shaft and having it fit to my 917 D2 head.

    Thanks;

    I don't recall seeing any information from Titleist regarding 'spining' shafts. One way of accomplishing this would be to find a clubmaker in your area who can perform the service. Remember that you will want to have the shaft dialed in because any change in the SureFit settings might affect the relative shaft/head alignment.

    Not to be rude, but I compare the "spine align" phenomena with snake oil. I swing over 120 MPH and I can adjust the loft on my driver up and down to suit the ground/weather/whatever and I don't start magically hitting the ball off line or start hitting it straighter based on where I've set it up. I've had three "spined" shafts in my lifetime (2 drivers and a 3 wood) and I've never noticed a lick of difference. At my speeds, if there was anything to this theory, I'd hit the ball all over the yard if the shaft was out of alignment. Perhaps you just have a bad shaft.

    Hi Rob, We do get this question from time to time and here is our response. The puring analysis and process claims to locate the most stable orientation of any golf shaft to minimize off-line bending and twisting. The Titleist R & D team has conducted testing with tour and top amateurs to compare performance between shafts that have been pure'd and shafts that have not. We have not been able to measure any performance improvement or benefit. We have no plans to offer pure'd shafts and do not endorse or recommend the process for Titleist clubs. However, golf is a mental game as well and if you believe this process will assist you with playing better golf, go for it.

    The other scenario is that perhaps a different shaft would give you better performance.  We would recommend checking with your club fitter.

    I have given some thought of having pure'd shafts but based on Titleist's testing and the many great shafts available I am confident that we can all be fit with a great performing shaft and avoid the extra cost of puring shafts. In any event this is a personal decision so only you know what is/feels right to you, but, looking at other shaft options I think is a must. Good luck!!
