How Long Do You Play With Single Ball?

  1. How long will you guys play a single golf ball before switching to a new ball?

I've played three rounds with a single ball (a customized ProV1x, #15 and my initials), which is fairly unusual for me -- I typically donate a ball or two per round to a pond or the deep woods. The ball is scuffed-up and has a few cuts, but I've been playing pretty well with it and I'm superstitious, so I won't give up on it just yet.

How often do you change out your balls?

Just got back from Sand Valley where i played 53 holes with the same golf ball. Sand Valley (18), Mammoth Dunes (18), and The Sand Box (Par 3 17 holes). Played 35 1/2 holes in Cabo San Lucas with the same ball. Had to loose it on the second shot of the last hole on Cabo Del Sol. Blame the distraction of the ocean view. Probably average 36 holes per ball with the occasional lost ball in between. If not lost, I will throw one in the "driving range" bucket after 36 and hit it during practice on the range.

I keep playing till the scuff marks seem big enough where they could manipulate the flight of the ball...or I lose it in the drink
  6. I just finished my 10th round with the new Pro V1X ball yellow. It is banged up and still performs 74-73 this weekend
  7. In competition after nine holes, or sooner if any damage at all. In bounce games one round again subject to damage. Never play a ball that has been Out of Bounds, bad karma.

Till I donate it back to the golf course for someone else to use or it gets scuffed up to bad then hit it on the driving range

I played 72 holes this week and I actually played better with it over the last two rounds.
  10. I like the Prov1 ball.. don't know how many holes I play with it because I'll take out 3 from the bag and sometime rotate them.... Sometime it does seem like the ball looses it's punch. I'll hit it flush just to get up there and the ball is not as far as it should have been.
This week I switched to the Titleist Velocity Visi white ball and it is now my #1 ball. Very long off the tee and the Visi white ball has a much better feel that the reg. Velocity ball. Don't know why but.... the white is a process they use and NOT just painted on.... what ever. they feel great.

I play the same ball until I either lose it or it is badly scuffed up.
  12. When ever I lose it.

With my swing speed I will not be damaging the ball, so I'll use the same ball as long as I can keep it in play.

I will typically play about 6 holes before I swap out for a new ball.

Each rounds always starts with a fresh ProV1 #1 marked that same way with my 3 colored dots. Not exactly sure why I switch most of the times, but it tends to be some nonsensical reason...Missed a putt, had a bad approach shot..again something silly just giving me the excuse to put a "freshy" in play and get my game back on track.

On a side note, I do not usually lose many balls over the course of the year and I have gathered up quiet the number of shag ball buckets and bags that I am still not exactly sure what to do with.

Great question and I hope you have a great enjoyable summer golfing
  15. I donate the "scuffs" to the Junior Golf program at our Club.

Great responses! I play one until I lose it (typically 1 every other round of golf) or I scuff it (1 per round).
  17. As long as I can until it gets donated to the golf course.
  18. Either I lose it on the course, or there's a bad enough scuff that I toss it. Funny how the mind works, I too am superstitious, kind of like "golf karma"!
  19. Till I lose it in water, thick grass or woods or get real bad scuff marks.
  20. Played with a former tour pro over the weekend - he said he changes every 5 holes because something "breaks" in the ball if any longer. I told him I didn't believe that, I've played the same ball as long as possible and got through 54 holes before it got so beat up I couldn't stand it anymore and the ball still performed. Sounds like most are in my camp - may not stay pretty but as long as it performs roll with it!
  21. Curious what Titleist says on how long a ball can be played?

30 holes have been my max.
Mostly until I loose it, or until I have a really good reason to keep it, like a hole in one, so far I only have saved one ball.
  23. I will play with the same ball until it has a cart path tattoo on it. Then I retire it to the chipping bag.
  24. Interesting responses so far.

I normally use a new one for a major competition or round that matters. After about 36 holes the shine is worn off and normally doesn't look as good as new. Then it goes into second category, when I want a good ball but doesn't have to be perfect. Should it last 4 rounds then it goes into third category, of when I am on a social round or difficult course and risk of not seeing it for much longer.

If it survives all that, then into the practice bag.
