I wanted to get peoples thoughts on when is the best time to get a club fitting. I am new and have only been playing around a year so personally I think its to early to get fitted and I should only go go when I can produce consistent results, in terms of swing path etc. I think this because I am not good enough yet and I don't have my swing identity yet. Hope any of that made sense.

Is this the right way to think about it, what do you think? Looking forward to your replies.

  2. No right answer, but I can weigh in on my opinion. First, I would always encourage any level player to get fit as soon as possible, primarily because as you learn the swing if you have clubs that dont fit you will figure out a way and a swing to manipulate the club to work for you, extra compensations that aren't necessary. As a new player you may not be ready to determine much of the differebt options on your own, I would find a trusted fitter that can evalutate where your current game is at and where it is heading and set you up with a more budget conscience option since you may be upgrading or outgrowing them soon, but at least get the static specs dialed in. Golf clubs are like tires, eventually you need to replace them, get something that works for you "today" and not worry about 3-5 years down the road.

I think I am thinking too far down the road, that helps, thanks.

The sooner you get equipment that will help your game, the sooner you will start to play better.

Find a Titleist Thursday and see how it goes. The fitters are great and don't judge you by your current ability.

It's a bit like the "which came first the chicken or the egg" argument. Having a consistent swing helps, but having clubs that fit you will also help you get to a consistent swing. If you aren't ready to pull the trigger on a fitting then I would suggest working with a good instructor/coach to help you get your swing more consistent, then go through the fitting process.

My first mistake was not getting instructions when I started. If you can find an instructor that you trust, that person can see if/when your current club is hindering your swing. You want the club to compensate to you, not vice-versa. A good instructor could recommend some used clubs to help you if they don't think you are solid enough go for new clubs, or tell you when it is time to make the plunge. They like maintaining trust with golfers for lessons so they tend not to try to oversell you for a one-time sale.

I self learned for a while then lessons and more lessons, finally an equipment assessment. Forgive me but I'm becoming the person who steps up to the bar grabs a drink and out with the life story to anyone who will listen. Now that I got that out if "I wish I knew then what I know now" has ever parted you lips your already late for a fitting. Your club should fit the swing not the other way around. Why so brash, well it took me 25 years, yes 25 years of playing and getting better but losing my enjoyment along the way. After many years an assessment revealed I needed an extra .75 in length to each iron and medium grips. Amazing what information can do and how that translated to my swing was I finally could swing. Because my irons allow me to get in a good set up now I can also find the right set up for my driver. I went from 10.5 230 yard to 8.5 280 yards. So thanks for listening and allowing me share - I'm too excited over a full bag fitting in May, fingers crossed. Cheers!

The big mistake is people thinking they need to be swinging well to get an accurate fitting. But truth is, a good fitter can tell by your swing pattern and the numbers where you can benefit from a head and/or shaft. And you're not fitting for good shots, your trying to get the most out of the bad ones. So just relax, warm up before the fitting, and have fun with it. You can always come back a second time to confirm the findings if you're so inclined, but they will likely not be very different.
