The importance of sound as an ingredient in feel?

I read someplace that Ben Hogan always said that with golf, “the game is all about feel.” I was thinking today, that sound is actually an important part of that. When I started playing again last year after several years away from the game, the first irons that I bought were “distance machines,” but they had a very brittle feel, and a very high pitched sound at impact.

My 716 AP1 irons impressed me with their solid feel, but also with the sound. I had a similar experience today when I tested a 917 driver.

So - it seems like someone at Acushnet is doing their homework when it comes to acoustics.

Just wondering if anyone else has seen (well, heard) the same thing?

For me it's different. I'm hard of hearing so everything is feel with me... I mean I do hear some sounds but I don't hear it the same way as everyone else..

Absolutely. Noticeable difference in acoustics from the 714 AP1s to the 716s & 718s and from the 915 to the 917.

Agreed. A well struck shot has a distinctive sound off Titleist clubs and you can always tell.
  5. I definitely agree. I do notice a difference in sounds leads to a difference in feel. I tested the TM M1 a year or so ago, and couldn’t stand the feel, part of which came from a horrible sound. I hit my Titleist driver now, and love both the sound and feel! Great clubs, great feel, great sound!

    Interesting topic! Thanks for sharing!

Sound is important to me as well. My son in law notes that when I am on with my driver it has a completely different sound to it.

Sound is definitely important to me. The sound of the ball on the club, the sound of my playing partners laughing at me, the sound of a ball against a tree or splashing of water, the sound of my buddies groaning as i sink a putt, all different but sounds i react to. I have hit some clingy sounding drivers but never one that was made by Titleist. Love Titleist driver sound.

Yes, today it's both sound and feel. I've been to demo days at the club and the others don't have that nice sound and feel of the Titleist woods.

Titleist worked hard on sound after listening to pros with the 915. The have an acronym FAST, and the S is for improved sound. And I couldn’t agree more.

Nothing better than pure shot, both sound and feel!

Think it is a combination of both. Before you even look up, you know you have hit your number.
