My swing grip is solid, but I took some extra time to review my putting grip and found that it was far from what it should be. My putting grip was more or less was matching my swing grip (overlap) meaning too much in the fingers and not in the palm. I also went to the most common reverse overlap putting grip. Just at hint for everyone to keep an eye on the grip...fundamental for sound golf.

Great advice Sawyer. Being an older golfer I also use the same grip, maintaining consistency, but use a midsize Winn grip on my putter. Thus minimizing the grip pressure on the putter and this has helped me. Was told once upon a time by an old southern gentleman who played against the best (Hogan, Snead) up and down the east coast; hold it like an egg, maintain a smooth pendulum stroke towards your target line and keep you head down. And one other thing he strongly emphasized, you can only look at a putt so many ways, believe in your line and putt the ball. Man, this gentleman of age could putt the lights out. We need another outing.

Really struggling right now with my golf grip! Came on here to start a thread and here it is! Left handed player, but my bottom hand just feels lost. Its kinda "strong" and to the side of the club. When I swing the club is twisting closed and its producing some ugly shots and some even worse confidence. Leave the course every night thinking tomorrow is my day, but it continues to be a struggle to get my bottom hand gripping properly, anyone have any advice?

    Eric,

This may be some of the best advice you will ever get regarding your putting grip struggle. You sound really determined to resolve your grip woes. See a PGA class A teaching pro and have them help you. I would strongly suggest you entertain the idea of making a switch to a lead-hand low grip. This will resolve your issues with your grip. There are many lead-hand low type grips so check with a pro to help you find one that may appeal to you. It will take time to adapt and adjust to this new feel but in the long run you will new look back and will be glad you made the switch. Hope this helps as I had your problem many years ago and now I consider myself a very good putter with a lead-hand low grip. It did take a lot of work and patience to make the switch. Good luck.

  5. Eric ... place your thumbs closer together on the top of the grip, and make sure you are not flipping the club which will 'close the door' at impact leaving putts left of the hole. Many players struggle with the left hand/right hand battle to control the face ... thumbs together will lessen the battle. Always hold the line as far through the impact as possible ... hope this helps!

I've been working on fixing this and my stroke is so much more solid (and fluid) just by getting the grip more in my palms. Good tip, Sawyer.

I tend to pull putts which I attribute to flipping my right hand while using a double reverse overlap grip. I have looked thru some notes I made years ago working with my pro. He suggested an extreme weak left hand and thinking of pulling the left hand thru to the cup. Seems to work for me. Of course my Scotty helps too.
  8. I also held my Scotty Cameron ( California Monterey ) more in my fingers with a standard overlap grip like I use for all my other clubs. Since the start of the year I have been experimenting with getting the putter more in the palms. I found 2 things, moving the putter to the palms with a standard overlap grip still felt like my fingers were to involved and the standard Scotty Cameron rubber pistol grip was to small and that was causing me to have to much grip pressure. So I experimented with multiple hand positions and now use a reverse 2 finger overlap grip, this allowed me to get another finger off the putter grip and it seemed to help lighten my grip pressure. I played several rounds with this grip and my putting improved statistically but I still felt like I had to focus to much at keeping the putter secure in the palms which lead to my grip pressure issue returning, especially when my hands were sweaty which is the majority of the time where I live. I went to a local golf store an experimented with several used putters that had different style oversized grips until I found the grip that felt good and allowed me to control the putter with very light grip pressure. I went with the Super Stroke Flatso 2.0 and so far I am happy with the results.
