Rusting wedge already!

  1. I own a brand new vokey SM6 steel gray 54 M grind less than a month old. Played 1 round with it, hit 4 shots off favorable lies except one from sand. No bare lies or anything terrible for finish. I wipe clubs off after we shots. I HATE rust on clubs, and have had none on any I have owned. I am not one of those "rust adds spin/character to your wedges" guys. I am aware that scratches and dings happen, but this club is starting to rust already after about 10 to 20 shots with it. This club did not advertise a "raw finish" and I have not heard of it happening with this before. What the heck is going on? This is my first Title is club and it might be the last, at least for wedges. The dark spots on face, not the grooves, are rust beginning to form already.

That's odd for the steel grey, I used a 50-54-58 for
2 months, and never got one spot of rust.

Sure someone from Titleist will reply to this.

I also don't like the weathered look. I just ordered the 48.08, 54.14 and 60.08 all in the Tour Chrome finish because I'm hoping they're least likely to rust. Where did you get it? Any way it could be counterfeit?

    Hi Mark,
I'm very sorry to hear about your new Vokey wedge. Please take it back to your pro shop and have them contact our Warranty department. The Warranty department will take a look at it and get this resolved as soon as possible.
  6. Hi Mark, I have played the wedges (starting with the 5s) and never ever had any issues. To me the club face looks really odd and I'd question the source to be frank. I can't imagine Titleist quality check to have missed a surface failure. Return it and habe them check asap!

Is the face hardened on the SM6 as it is on the SM5 model?

I always wipe them down with WD40 so they wont rust.

WD40 will remove the finish on some clubs. Great on steel shafts though.

If you're really afraid of rust, I'd recommend using a food grade silicone spray. Spray it on before/after rounds. Dries quickly with no mess. Highly recommended by the Scotty Cameron collectors.

I have never had the finish come off. To me it keeps them looking new. I'm really picky about my clubs looking good. I hate dirty or rusty clubs. I use it on my AP1, SM4, and now my SM6 with no problem

Ok great. Just don't use WD-40 on Scotty Cameron Gun Blue or Pro Platinum finishes, among others. It will take it off.

I might be naive on this subject but wont wd40 or PAM spray on your wedges cause less friction and thus less spin?

Wipe down with a damp towel and a rub with the dry end takes all the debris off my raw finsh heads and they show no finish change in the four months they have been in the bag. JAT.

Interesting to see so much hate for rust. Vokey raw/rusty wedges are some of my favorite wedges I've ever used-- so much so that I just ordered two new wedgeworks Vokey raw wedges.
  15. Hi Mark, did you end up getting a replacement from Titleist?

I'm facing the same issue - 3 rounds and I'm seeing 7-9 rust spots already.

I bought the wedge from a big brand store in Indonesia, but there are plenty of counterfeits floating around here. 'fraid I got a fake one...
  16. I bought a new vokey 54* and 60* to match my new Titleist AP1 set [which has a 44*PW and a 48*SW]. I play the 60* perhaps 200 shots per week (incl practice obviously!) and all is perfect, but I have only hit 10 shots with the 54* wedge since i bought it a month ago and it's already rusting!!! Getting hard to get the rust off afterwards now. There is a tiny scratch on the sole that rusts and a few spots on the face. Perhaps from a bunker shot [I tried it from the bunker once].
What should i do anyone? I am currently carrying an old swoosh 60* to use in the bunkers, but that's not why I bought Vokeys!!

Just embrace it. Only complain about it when you hit a bad shot with it.

I have a beautiful shovel hanging in the garage. My gardener has a scratched up shovel he uses every day, he loves it and it gets the job done. Somehow he makes my yard look great even with that old set of tools. Take a sneak peek in a pros bag and see what their tools look like. There is a reason more pros play Vokey than all other wedges and its not because of the durability of the finish. I guess the point is that golf clubs, by design, are supposed to interact with the turf and will always show signs of wear. When that play is sporadic or conditions are wet, some rust and scratches are inevitable. This is even more prevalent on wedges. The sand quickly cuts through the finish and so they will always rust on the bottom and face if left wet or around damp air. That's not as noticeable if you play with them every day as the turf and sand keeps the rust worn off but as soon as the set for a few days, it will come back. I get it, we pay a lot for these beautiful clubs and love how they look the day we peel away the plastic. I guess how long before they are supposed to look used is a bit subjective. Sorry you are unhappy with yours, the picture doesn't look bad to me and if it performs well i would say keep playing with it.

Personally I like the rusted look, but Titleist always makes things right.
  20. Well said Dale. I live in Washington State and as everyone probably knows, it has been
known to rain a bit in these parts. I've been playing Vokey wedges for 2 years and have
had one incident of rusting. Played a 3-man scramble in October out on the coast, and
it dumped on us on Sunday. Got home Sunday night and dragged everything out of the
back of my truck (reminded me of my duck hunting days) to dry out. When I checked on
things the next night, I noticed a little rust on the sole of one of my wedges. Took some
fine steel wool to clean it up. Presto! Good as new.
