Fairhaven, MA (August 22, 2005) – Playing the Titleist Pro V1 golf ball, Vaughn Taylor became only the second player on the 2005 PGA Tour to successfully defend a title, breaking the Reno-Tahoe Open scoring record in a three-stroke, wire-to-wire victory over Jonathan Kaye (Pro V1x). Taylor, in his second year on tour, opened with rounds of 64, 67 and 64 before closing with an even par 72 en route to a 21-under 267 total, four shots better than the previous tournament record set in 2003. Taylor, who led the field in greens in regulation at over 79 percent, also broke the tournament's 36- and 54-hole scoring marks. He joins Vijay Singh as the only repeat champions this year. Todd Fischer (Pro V1x) posted a 17-under to give Titleist players a 1-2-3 finish.
Titleist topped the golf ball count with 92 players, more than five times the nearest competitor with 17. Titleist was also the field favorite in the iron, utility iron, wedge and putter categories. The victory is the 19th for Titleist players on the PGA Tour this year, more than double the nearest competitor with 7 and more than all other golf balls combined.
At the WGC-NEC Invitational, Pro V1 golf ball loyalist Chris DiMarco topped a group of 10 Titleist players who were among the top 12 finishers. In addition to DiMarco's runner-up effort, Vijay Singh (Pro V1x), Ryan Palmer (Pro V1x) and another Pro V1x player tied for third, while Luke Donald (Pro V1x), Kenny Perry (Pro V1x) and David Howell (Pro V1x) tied for sixth, and Zach Johnson (Pro V1x), Jose Maria Olazabal (Pro V1) and David Toms (Pro V1) tied for ninth. Titleist topped the golf ball count with 43 players in the 72-player field, nearly four times the nearest competitor with 11.
